Born in Venezuela and raised in Puerto Rico, Kay experienced early on how a poor lifestyle regime can affect one’s life. Her paternal grandmother was morbidly obese and it resonated with Kay as a child. At home, her mother suffered with a mental illness, and Kay had to navigate the uncertainty of her mother’s emotions on her own. During her teenage years, Kay put on weight, in which her dad made reference to, “I can still hear his voice. What he said are words a little girl should never hear.”

A high school crush motivated Kay to start a fitness regime and in one summer, she went from a size 16 to a size 4. She dedicated her time to learn about nutrition and exercise and even prepared her own meals. Exercise was her way of dealing with the tidal wave of emotions at home and working out became her happy place, a place of sanctuary.

This love of nutrition and exercise continued through college at Marquette University and a career in business and IT. Eventually, Kay decided to take the leap and start her own business, LIFFT. She’s been featured on Chicago’s Windy City Live and WGN. She works with WGN’s Lourdes Duarte and Ana Belaval amongst many of Chicago’s elite Modern Brown Girls.

Kay is beautiful and confident and evokes an effortless cool that begs the question, what’s her secret? But even Kay herself admits that she is constantly fighting a battle with eating right and staying healthy, physically and mentally. The sanctuary that she discovered as a teenager is what she wants her clients to experience, a place of mindfulness and motivation. Kay is adamant that exercise is the key to keep the mental fog at bay. “What you put into your body is so important; when you start to eat better, you will notice how positively your body responds.”

Kay’s 5 tips for staying mentally and physically strong

1. There’s no getting around it, you have to workout. Do it in the morning, so that you have no obstacles to keep you from it. You will feel so inspired that you accomplished one important thing before the day has really taken hold.

2. Listen to inspiring music or podcasts. Fill your mind with messages that motivate.

3. Ditch the TV and read. Read fiction, non-fiction, poems, anything.

4. Cut down on sugars and high carb content foods. Do it slowly and you will notice a huge difference.

5. Water, water, water, water. Drink more water. Your body and mind will thank you for it.
