Isabella Boylston, Principal Ballerina, American Ballet Theatre

She kicks of her day with a hearty breakfast, with eggs and toast, since it’s a great dose of energy and protein, which helps her concentrate throughout the day. She enjoys eating pasta and eats spaghetti carbonara before shows, usually 4 hours before curtain call. In between meals she likes snacking on bananas to refuel on calories and potassium she sweats out during the first half of her performance. And of course she drinks plenty of water because it helps with digestion, energy and hydration.

Linda Celeste Sims, Company Dancer, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre Company

She spends every morning doing an 80 minute ballet class, followed by rehearsal from noon to 7 p.m. For lunch she’ll have a steak salad, which she enjoys because salad does a better job breaking down the meat and helps with digestion. She also enjoys eating raw summer rolls, which she claims get you a flat belly in minutes. In addition to her grueling schedule, she practices Pilates before she performs, which help strengthen her core, making her stomach look strong and ready for show time.

Mary Helen Bowers, Former New York City Ballet Dancer and Creator of Ballet Beautiful Fitness

She’s more practical about her diet and rather than thinking about what not to eat, she focuses on what she can eat to look and feel her best. For lunch she will have slow-cooked oats with fresh berries and raw nuts, for lunch she will have a green salad with grilled fish, an apple and peanut butter snack or dark chocolate and tea, and for dinner she will have baked chicken, with steamed greens and brown rice. She stays away from heavily processed foods and those foods high in sodium, which can cause her to bloat. Instead she enjoys anti-inflammatory foods, like salmon, berries, and greens without adding the extra water weight.
