Be Grateful
One of the first lessons I learned from my mom was to be grateful. Simple things like being polite, saying hello, thank you, and excuse me, were things that she taught me early on. As an adult I don’t try to take anything for granted because we should always be grateful for everything that we have in life, good or bad. She also taught me to be humble and to never forget where I came from.
Goals
My mom, along with my dad always taught us to have goals. If you don’t have goals and dreams, you have nothing. I remember I always wanted to be a waitress, but they never let me. Not because a waitress job is not worthy, but because they didn’t want me to settle for a minimum-wage job, when I could strive for more and get an education. It’s important to ask children what they want to do when they grow up because dreams do come true if you work towards a goal in mind.
Home Remedies
We live in the age of technology, but my mom has a home remedy for practically everything. She believes strongly in the power of herbs and teas. Drinking chamomile tea when your stomach hurts or when you are having trouble sleeping works like a charm. Also, applying a piece of onionskin on an open wound helps it heal faster without scarring. These are only a few, she could probably write an entire encyclopedia on home remedies.
Love
My mom taught me that love comes when you least expect it. She’s been married to my father for over 40 years and even though they’ve been through a lot, they love each other unconditionally. She’s taught me that you have to be patient, that you have to take care of your relationships and that you should never take your loved one for granted. To tell them that you love them, but also show them how much you love them. Plus, to always look good because just because you’re married doesn’t mean that you should not look pretty.
