April 7th is World Health Day!
This year the World Health Organization is focusing on promoting food safety. This is a world campaign to make sure people are taking the necessary precautions when consuming every day foods. There are so many new threats being introduced, different types of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and chemicals that can get you sick. It only takes some small steps, but taking such steps can make a world of a difference.
- Cook meat thoroughly: One of the easiest ways to get sick or get E. coli is by eating raw or undercooked meat. You can also catch food-borne illnesses like salmonella or shigella that can easily send you to the hospital. Eating less red meat can also prevent you from eating harmful bacteria, not to mention reduces your risk of heart disease.
- Wash your fruit and vegetables: Many people have the bad habit of eating fruits or vegetables right from the supermarket shelves. This is a big no no because they could be contaminated with bacteria from water or soil, as well as pesticides. Rinse your food and scrub them under running water.
- Be careful while eating out: There are many restaurants that take the necessary precautions when it comes to handling food, but keep an eye out just in case. Make sure the restaurant is clean, ensure there are no bugs creeping around, that your food is cooked thoroughly, and that the staff, including servers and cooks maintain a clean environment.
- Smell your fish: Many people love sushi, but when consuming raw fish, make sure the fish does not smell too “fishy” because that can be red flag. Make sure there are no dark spots on the fish and that it’s not too dry. Look at the cleanliness and the way they prepare the sushi just to make sure.
- Think about you eat: Eliminate processed foods, junk food, and fast food. Check the labels, does it have super long words that are difficult to pronounce? Learn to make your own healthy snacks and meals at home.
