Everyday Ingredients That Alleviate Illnesses

One of the things Hispanics are known for is home remedies. These remedies come from mom or abuelita and the tradition carries on from generation to generation. Here are a few natural ingredients that have been used in Hispanic households for many years:

Cinnamon: Cinnamon tea can be used to calm an upset stomach, treat heartburn, indigestion, nausea, and even control flatulence.

Cilantro: This isn’t just great for pico de gallo, but it’s also used to alleviate stomach cramps and calm children when they’re anxious.

Epazote (wormseed): This is a very popular herb that they use on chilaquiles, but it also helps digestion, to relieve stomach cramps, and rid you of worms.

Oregano: This in the form of tea or oil can help an upset stomach, athlete’s foot and even help you menstruate when you’re late.

Gordolobo (mullein): This furry plant is made into a tea and it helps suppress your cough, asthma, and bronchitis.

Aloe Vera: You can put the gel from aloe Vera on cuts or burns and it can help heal them fast.

Garlic: It is a great form of antioxidant, but it can help with hypertension, relieve a cough, and can even relieve a toothache.

Basil: This is used for headaches, urinary infections in the bladder and kidneys, as well as dizziness.

Avocados: Delicious on guacamole, but it also helps lower your blood sugar. The leaves on avocado alleviate menstrual pains and the avocado seed is considered an aphrodisiac.

Grapes: These are great antioxidants and eating grapes can help alleviate symptoms of allergies, including a runny nose and watery eyes, not to mention get rid of a scratchy throat.

Chamomile: This tea is not only great for a stomach ache, but it relieves stress, anxiety, and depression. For many years it’s been used to relieve insomnia and encourage a good night’s sleep.
