Almost a year after Prince’s passing, his ex-wife Mayte Garcia shares details from their marriage and the tragedy of losing a child that tore them apart. Her new memoir, The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince, she shares the highs and lows of their love story.
The couple lost their child in 1996 because he was born with Pfeiffer syndrome type 2, a rare genetic disorder. The child’s name was Amiir, which was Arabic for prince. “I don’t think he ever got over it,” says Garcia to PEOPLE. “I don’t know how anybody can get over it. I know I haven’t.”
Garcia was only 22 when she discovered she was pregnant, and she remembers how happy they both were of the news. The pregnancy was running smoothly until she began to bleed one day, which is when she was tested for genetic abnormalities. The doctor told them that, “Sometimes the body is trying to release the fetus for a reason.” Yet, Prince was against it and they prayed for the child’s health.
“Please, bless this child,” said Prince as he prayed on his knees. “We know you won’t allow this child to be harmed.” But further exams revealed more complications, including dwarfism.
