¿Pueden los supervivientes volver a infectarse con el coronavirus?

Las personas de todo el mundo que se han recuperado del nuevo coronavirus desean saber lo mismo: ¿Tengo inmunidad, al menos durante un tiempo? Uno nuevo estudio de coronavirus comunes no es exactamente tranquilizador.

Los investigadores encontraron que “no era raro” que las personas con coronavirus comunes (no el que causa la COVID-19) tuvieran infecciones repetidas en un plazo de un año. De 86 residentes de la ciudad de Nueva York que se infectaron con esos coronavirus, 12 tuvieron resultados positivos del mismo germen de nuevo.

Una gran salvedad es que el estudio solo observó a los cuatro coronavirus que son endémicos en los humanos, el tipo que no provocan nada peor que síntomas de resfriado.

“Son más bien flojos”, señaló el investigador Jeffrey Shaman, profesor de ciencias de la salud ambiental de la Facultad de Salud Pública Mailman de la Universidad de Columbia. “Las personas raras veces van al médico por esas infecciones”.

Así que es difícil saber, apuntó Shaman, si nuestras experiencias con los coronavirus endémicos serán equivalentes con el SARS-CoV-2, el coronavirus que provoca la COVID-19.

“No es igual que esos virus endémicos”, aclaró Shaman. “Pero, obviamente, no podemos observar las infecciones repetidas con [el SARS-CoV-2] porque es nuevo”.
