Vegetables in Your Soap?

The other day I was at my local farmer’s market and I came across a stand that was selling vegetable soaps. The soaps smelled beautiful, and since the lady selling them said they were from Paris, I was even more intrigued. I bought the soap for $3, which I thought was a pretty good deal, seeing how homemade soaps can often be quite expensive, mostly because of the natural ingredients that are used to make these soaps.

The saleswoman promised that the small bar of soap, which smelled like lavender, would last a long time. I was hesitant, but I gave it a shot anyways. It’s been three weeks and the bar of soap I still have about 75% of the soap. Most commercial soaps do not last this long and can often get gooey with moisture and some don’t leave your skin as hydrated as they say they do. Surprisingly this soap has done wonders for my skin, leaving it moisturized as well as helped me get rid of acne that I couldn’t get rid of for weeks.

What’s In Vegetable Soap?

We all know the great benefits of eating vegetables and when you use a good quality vegetable soap, you’ll be happy to know of all the natural ingredients in your soap:

Vegetable Oils

These can include vegetable components such as avocado seeds, coconut oil, olive pits and palm kernels, which are the primary ingredients used in vegetable based soaps.

Fragrance

You should always pick a soap that smells great because it adds to the experience. Essential oils like lavender add to therapeutic properties of the soap because not only is it emotionally calming and relaxing, but it’s also good to get rid of acne.

Herbs

There are many herbs that are used in vegetable soaps to give it color. Many herbs have nutritive properties, which is a plus.

Milk

We all know that milk is a good source of calcium, but milk can also soothe and moisturize the skin to relieve dryness and itchy skin.

There are many more ingredients that can be used to make great vegetable soaps. A farmer’s market is a great way to introduce yourself to vegetable soaps if you haven’t done so already. It gives you the opportunity to talk to the merchant and ask what’s in the soap. Many times they are more than happy to give you a list of ingredients or recommend a soap that fits your needs.
