Is Red Wine Good For You If You Have Type 2 Diabetes?

They say that red wine is good for the heart and now a recent study is proving that a glass of red wine each evening may offer heart health perks to those with type 2 diabetes. One of the most difficult things for those that have diabetes is the scary fact that your risk for heart disease is high.

A two-year study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine is the first long-term study aimed at assessing the effects and safety of drinking moderate amounts of alcohol in people with type 2 diabetes. These are people that are at a higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease, as well as have lower levels of HDL, the good cholesterol.

aogwnng46h9iv2kergowResearchers studied 224 people ages 45 to 75 with controlled diabetes and who generally abstained from alcohol. Over the course of 2 years, the patients were randomly assigned to drink 5 ounces of red wine, white wine, or mineral water with their dinner. In addition they were encouraged to follow a Mediterranean diet plan, which is generally high in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, fish and olive oil.
