We lift our eyes and boost butts and breasts, but what about lips? As one of our primary facial features, lips can change shape with age, making us look sad, angry and unbalanced as they lose volume.

According to distinguished Manhattan facial plastic surgeon Sam Rizk, MD, “Lips play a crucial role in the appearance of the face. Changes to the perioral region that occur due to aging can cause the lips to appear thinner, with a flatter profile and less curvature,” says Dr. Rizk.
To restore a more youthful diamond shape Dr. Rizk has developed a Lip Lift procedure and put the plump back in an off-balance pucker. A lip lift can correct a host of issues, including an upper lip that is too long and enhance the pink portion of the lip, for a fuller appearance. The procedure also lifts the lip’s position with regard to the teeth, creating a broader smile.
Types of Lifts include:
- Gull-wing lip lift. Performed to extend the border of the lip. This type of lift involves a “gull-wing” (M-shaped) incision along the vermilion (border) of the upper lips.
- Bull-horn lip lift. The bull-horn lip lift is performed to shorten the distance between the upper lip and the nose. During this type of lip lift, the incision is placed at the base of the nose.
- Corner lip lift. This lip lift procedure involves an incision at the oral commissures (corner) of the upper lip. It is performed to correct a drooping outer corner of the mouth, which can result in a “sad” appearance.
Italian lip lift. The Italian lip lift is similar to the bullhorn lip lift except that it involves two incisions at the base of each nostril instead of one long one.
