Oats are whole grains that haven’t been stripped off their nutritious bran and germ in processing. Oatmeal is a healthy carb, rich in fiber, antioxidants and vitamins. When you eat processed oats like you do in some cereal, the cooking time and texture may cut the nutrients, which is why it’s best to eat them in their purest form:

Steel cut oats: These almost look like rice that’s been cut into pieces. They take the longest to cook and have the highest amount of soluble fiber, protein and iron.

Rolled oats: These are also called old-fashioned or whole oats. These absorb more liquid and are often found in granola bars and other baked goods.

Quick oats: These are the most processed, they are pre-cooked dried and rolled and pressed thinner. They cook quicker and often look mushy.

Why Should You Be Eating Oatmeal?

  1. Helps reduce blood pressure
  2. Manage weight
  3. Reduces cholesterol
  4. Great for dry, itchy or irritated skin
  5. Stabilizes blood sugar
  6. Helps prevent colon cancer
  7. Healthy carb and protein
  8. Helps keep your immune system strong
  9. Contain melatonin, which helps you sleep
  10. Loaded with antioxidants

One of the great things about oats is that you can incorporate them into almost anything. You can eat them raw, cooked, for breakfast and even incorporate them in dishes you serve at dinner.
