At 32.8 percent of the country being obese, it was also reported that 70 percent of the country is overweight with one in six people having diabetes.

The United States, however, is not too far behind with 31.8 percent of people being obese. Regardless of the country, this is a widespread epidemic with intense health issues affecting North America.

According to the study, obesity is disproportionately affecting the poor, malnourished and youth in Mexico.  Based on research and population information, Mexican lifestyles have been changing over the past few years moving from labor-intense jobs to more sedentary occupations while consuming carbohydrate heavy foods.

Many Mexicans blame fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King crossing the border.

Although there are many healthy food choices, many are now consuming food once reserved for holidays and special occasions on a daily basis. Healthy food choices are more expensive for those who are poor, not to mention that the fried and high-carb foods are more delicious.

Because of the obesity rates, Mexicans are developing diabetes which is killing approximately 70,000 people a year along with heart disease which is quickly following suit.
