Multiple Sclerosis…Hug?

If it’s something Latinos are known for is for hugging and kissing. We love affection and love showing it. Unfortunately there’s a little something called the MS Hug, which is not something cuddly or wonderful. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and very unpredictable disease of the central nervous system.

The MS Hug is a collection of spasms in the intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs. The purpose of these muscles is to hold your ribs and they give you the flexibility you need to move around. These muscle spasms that take place in that area can last just a couple seconds or a couple of hours.

Yet, some people report no pain, but do feel the tight pressure around their waist, torso or neck. Some people experience tingling, burning, crushing, hot or cold burning, pins and needles, stabbing pain, and even the feeling of ants crawling under the skin.

Since the MS Hug is a neurological pain, which comes from the brain, there’s no ibuprofen or Tylenol that will get rid of the pain. Your doctor can provide muscle relaxant prescription medicine that will help relieve the muscle spasms and tightness.

There are some things that you can do at home that can help with these MS Hug attacks. Simple things like wearing lightweight clothing, rather than fitted clothes can help you feel less pressure in this area. Warm compresses or a warm bath can also help with these symptoms, as well as massage and inhaling and exhaling.
