Is Bacon Healthy?

What’s In Bacon?

Bacon has a bad reputation because of the fat content. It is mostly made from pork and it goes through a curing process where the meat is soaked in salt, nitrates, spices and sugars. The amount of fat in bacon is less than breakfast sausage. It also doesn’t have any trans fats and has less cholesterol than other cuts of beef and chicken.

Good Stuff

Low calories: One ounce of cooked turkey bacon has 107 calories and one slice of bacon has 43 bacon, frying baconcalories. Choose a center cut bacon if you want low saturated fat, which is a healthier option.

Protein: It has high amounts of essential amino acids, including tryptophan, which is good for brain health, leucine, which helps build muscles and glutamic acid, which is essential for your nervous system.

Nutrients: Bacon has thiamin, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, riboflavin, magnesium, iron, zinc and selenium.

Makes You Happy: Eating bacon makes people happy, which helps reduce stress.

Raises Good Cholesterol: It raises your high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) or the “good cholesterol” and the higher it is the better because a low HDL puts you at risk for developing heart disease.

We’re not here to encourage you to eat a baconator on a daily basis, but what we are saying is that it’s o.k. to eat bacon in moderation without feeling the guilt. Yes bacon is high in fat, yes it’s a processed meat, and yes it’s high in sodium, but it’s really not that bad when compared to other types of processed meats. So, enjoy your bacon and be happy.
