Feeling Sluggish After a Great Weekend?

One of the best things about the weekend is being able to relax and enjoy yourself. Many of us get invited to birthday parties, social events, and dinners at restaurants, where we often overindulge. When you’re hanging out with loved ones, family or friends it’s often difficult to say no to alcoholic drinks and delicious food. We don’t feel guilty while were having a good time, but the next day or the start of the new week we feel sluggish and guilty because we overdid it.

Too many calories or a sodium overdose is more common than you think, especially during the summer. One of the first things you have to do is acknowledge that you overdid it and don’t beat yourself up. Many times we make it a habit to overeat at night, especially when we’re having a great time. Don’t feel guilty about it, instead acknowledge your behavior and start fresh. Being negative doesn’t get you anywhere.

Start fresh the next day. If you had a little too much to drink last night, make sure you start by drinking plenty of water to help hydrate your body. In the summer we drink beer because it’s cold, but beer doesn’t keep you hydrated, instead it dehydrates you. Alcohol is a diuretic, so it promotes the production of urine, causing you to expel more water than normal. This is why when you drink beer you often have to keep going to the bathroom.

Drink lots of water and if you don’t like the taste of regular water, you can add some lemon or orange juice. D-limonene is an antioxidant found in these citrus fruits. It activates enzymes in the liver that help detox your liver. Green tea is another great option because it has tons of antioxidants and very little caffeine.

Whatever you do, don’t try to eliminate meals for overindulging the night before, especially breakfast. Instead eat lighter healthier portions and add fruits and proteins. For example, the protein from an egg and fruit can help get your blood sugar stabilized. This will keep you full and at the same time give you the energy you need to workout and fight off high calorie fatty foods.

Make sure you have the right amount of food inside you to begin working out. Even doing light cardio like taking your dog out for a walk in the morning can help. You might feel a bit sluggish and bloated, but getting up and taking a walk can help move your fluids around. Take it easy; don’t overwork yourself because you’re more prone to injury if you over do it.

Taking the simple steps of keeping hydrated, eating right, and working out can help you get through the sluggishness and help you get back on the right foot.
