Supermom: 4 Kids, Full-time Job, in the Military and Runs for Fun!

It is recommended to get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, yet some of us still can’t find time in our schedule to go for a walk or a quick run. Monica Perez might put many of us to shame because she works a full-time job, has 4 children (1 in college); she’s in the National Guard and as an added bonus—runs marathons for fun!

Perez started running in 2009 after her 4th child was born because she wanted to get in shape. Shortly after she decided to challenge herself by participating in short races, so she began doing short-distance races like a 5k and a 12k. It wasn’t easy, but it was a learning experience and through the years, she’s continued to challenge herself.

Running

During the 6 years that she’s been running, she’s completed a total of 10 marathons, many shorter races, and even a 50k. “Running takes me away from things, it makes me feel good and I make a lot of important decisions while I’m running,” explains Perez.

With 4 kids, Perez knows that if she wants to run, she has to plan for it. “I do most of my running before work, so if I want to do 5 miles, I know I have to plan to run for 45 minutes and make sure I have my kid’s lunches ready before they go to school,” she says.

“Running makes me feel better because when I’m constantly running and training and I miss a couple of days, I start missing it and I don’t feel like myself,” she says. Running makes her feel well balanced and makes her push herself, empowering her to believe that she can do anything. She encourages everyone to run, it’s something she’s learned to love, even though at the beginning you have to experiment to see what works best for you.

Tips to Start Running

Training is Extremely Important

One of the organizations she runs for is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Perez has a nephew that was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, so this made her learn more about the organization and found that it does great things for patients with various types of blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myelomas. Her nephew has been in remission for 5 years, but that hasn’t motivated her to stop and she’s run the Chicago Marathon several years, benefiting that organization. This is how she found her team in training.

“I almost feel guilty because I raise all of this money for a great cause, but look at what I’m getting, not only great friendships but this awesome support group that is there with you training,” she explains. When she decided to run for this organization, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society put together a team of coaches, mentors, and other runners. An amazing team that has developed into some really great friendships. Plus a lot of the friends that she trains with have some sort of connection with the disease, which gives her the satisfaction that she’s helping make a difference in the lives of others.

Military

Perez went into the military right after high school for 5 years, but then when she got married and had kids she took a break and signed up to be in the National Guard in 2011. “I think running was one of the reasons why I went back into the military because if I could run a marathon, then I could do the military,” she says. The training that she gets while preparing for marathons and other races made her get into shape, so when she went back to the military, she was prepared. Just recently, she was in Germany doing some training, since she’s part of the National Guard Military Police.

This weekend Monica celebrated her 40th birthday by running the Chicago Marathon and later this month she will run another Marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. She is an inspiration to mothers and women of all ages because she is the definition of hard-work and dedication.
