What’s Underneath Your Nail Polish?

They say you can tell the age of a woman by their hands. Many people have the habit of applying moisturizer after they wash their hands to keep their hands healthy and soft. Others are at the nail salon every two weeks getting a manicure, but have you ever really taken a closer look at your nails? Like your face and hands, your nails can tell a lot about your health.

Healthy nails should be pinkish with a bit of white where the nail falls off the skin. If you have red nails, that might mean you have to visit your cardiologist because you might have cardiovascular issues. Blue or purple nails can mean you need more oxygen in your blood.

If your nails are brittle or chipped it might mean that you have too much iron or that you have heart disease. Often we forget about our nails or assume that because we wash dishes, the hot water makes our nails weak. It might also mean that you need more vitamin C, folic acid or protein.

If you have grooves in your nails that can mean that you’re developing psoriasis, you can find dryness in other parts of your body as well. Super thick nails can be a yeast infection, issues with your thyroid gland or even lung problems.

As Latinas, we love beauty products and enjoy looking pretty. So, don’t neglect your nails because underneath that nail polish there could be signs of something more. If you suspect you have one of these health conditions, please visit your doctor because they can help guide in the right direction and treat a health issue before it develops into something more serious.
