The Damaging Effects of the Faja

More and more we see women posting photos on Instagram with their tiny waists, attributing it to corset training.  Yet, this is nothing new for Latin American women because for years women in Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico have worn a faja or corset to get that coca-cola bottle perfect shape. Yet, the cost of having a small waist can come at a high price.

One thing is wearing Spanx or a corset to look slim in a dress when you’re going out to a special event, but wearing that tight girdle around your waist for long periods of time can have a damaging effect.

Corset training limits any type of movement in your mid-section. Most importantly, it puts pressure on some of your most important organs, like your lungs, making it difficult to breathe and even cause lung infections. They can also affect food intake and cause digestive problems and it can cause acid reflux because of the pressure it puts on your stomach.

There is a psychological addiction to corsets. People become so obsessed with having a tiny waist that they limit themselves from many things, like food and even water. The feeling of being full after you eat puts added pressure to your midsection when you use a corset, making you feel suffocated. There have also been cases from women that develop eating disorders because they are so obsessed with being thin.

There is no research that supports that corset training is a healthy way to lose weight. In fact those that have used it temporarily say corsets increase sweating which allows them to lose water weight, but only temporarily. Once you stop wearing the corset, your body bounces back to the way it was. The only thing that will help you to have a tiny waist is dieting and lots of abdominals.
