Social media is a great place to exchange ideas, but it’s also the primary way that young people get their news. More and more health experts are stepping up to the plate and providing useful information that can be shared among the masses to better their health. Dr. Hector Martinez is a chiropractor that is often sharing tips and ideas on a variety of health issues, including back pain remedies, symptoms you should watch out for, and even home remedies.
“I realized it’s a lot of fun being in a place where I can go in there and express myself,” says Martinez. His Facebook page contains videos where he talks about different remedies, personal health experiences and more. He expresses how he enjoys interacting with his followers and on few occasions, he has gained patients from his following.
Martinez has an especially great following from sharing his knowledge from home remedies and supplements, which is something that the Latino community is very interested in. He took the knowledge he learned from school and training and applied that to himself. He later began sharing the remedies he would use on himself to his community on Facebook.
Growing up in a Latino household has influenced Martinez to use home remedies since he was young. “Growing up (Mexican) that’s something that was always talked about in my family… I come from a first generation traditional Mexican Family, and they talk a lot about remedies. They didn’t have other things, they didn’t have doctors, medications like we do now. I think some of that’s still is a part of our culture,” says Martinez. Some of the home remedies Martinez and his family constantly use includes peppermint for an upset stomach, chamomile tea for sleeping, and lemon with honey in hot water for a sore throat.
At his office, he uses various treatment methods, including essential oils, therapeutic massage, nutrition, and exercises. Martinez explains that every person is different, and require different remedies. Martinez explains that some of his favorite home remedies include apple cider vinegar, spices like turmeric, ginger, and lemon water because they all help detoxify the body. He knows of the benefits of using essential oils because they can help with stress, sleep, digestion and pain, which is something that he often encourages people to use.
Home remedies and supplements may not always be suitable for everyone. Martinez stresses that they are very individualized and that you should pinpoint your ailment to a doctor before you attempt treating it. “I think it becomes dangerous when there’s not a clear purpose of why they’re taking it, they’re not taking it the right way, they’re taking too much of it or they’re taking it with something that they shouldn’t.
Not having that knowledge is when people can start getting into trouble,” says Martinez. He recommends seeing a doctor in order to determine exactly what ailment they have. “We have to figure out what are their triggers, what could be causing the problem? What is going on with their body, and from there, remove whatever is creating that issue,” says Martinez.
The best way to use home remedies and supplements is to first talk to a professional that way you can take them the right way, and see how they work with other prescribed medications. He also encourages people to eat a healthy and balanced diet because many times food can help heal you from the inside out. Staying healthy is a 24/7 job, which is why he enjoys sharing health tips and encouraging a healthy dialogue on social media.
