Can Your Bathing Suit Make You Sick?

We’ve all been there. We go to the beach or to the swimming pool and when we are done swimming we don’t change our wet clothes. We let our bathing suits air dry while enjoying ourselves out in the sun, which is no big deal, right?  Improper hygiene and leaving your wet clothes on can cause a bladder infection or cystitis, which is why it’s important to take the necessary precautions to avoid it because it can be painful.bikini

What is cystitis?

Cystitis is the medical term for a lower urinary tract infection that is caused by a bacterial infection. Although it’s not a serious condition, it is very common and it can be painful and annoying if left untreated.

According to Cistitis.org, between 10 and 20% of women suffer from it at some point in their lives. It is more common among women since their urinary tract is shorter than men’s, which makes it easier for bacteria to reach the urethra more easily.

The main symptoms are burning or stinging when you pee, the urge to go more often, dark urine, and even blood!

A bacterial infection is very difficult to treat at home, but if you think you may have cystitis, talk to your doctor immediately. Otherwise, the infection increases and once it reaches the kidneys, that’s when blood appears in the urine and the pain becomes stronger. In most cases, it’s treated with antibiotics.

Tips to Prevent Cystitis

Drink Lots of Water

Drinking lots of water is not only good for the skin, but for your body in general. The more water you drink, especially during the warm months, the better. Drinking water can expel any bacteria that tries to get in through your urethra, preventing an infection.

Pee after having sex

When you have sex, there is a huge exchange of bacteria (yes, it is a bit disgusting, but it is true). Peeing right after sex can help prevent the spread of bacteria to the bladder.

Wet clothes

After bathing on the beach or pool, change your wet clothes. Bacteria and fungi like damp and moist places to live, so keep it dry down there. Tight-fitted clothes, like skinny jeans, can also cause bladder infections, so wear cotton panties and ease up on the tight jeans.

Blueberries

Eating blueberries and fruits that have high acidity levels kill bacteria, including bacteria that gives you urinary tract infections. Stock up on blueberries, cranberries, and yogurt, which is famous for introducing good bacteria into your system.

Don’t hold it in

It does not matter if you are in class or at work, if you have the need to pee, then you should go. It’s o.k. to hold it in for 10 minutes, but don’t go hours without using the bathroom, especially when you really have to go. Remember that your body releases waste that your body creates through your urine, so it’s important to flush it out.

Avoid cystitis or any other kind of infection by maintaining good hygiene and listen to your body. Follow these tips to prevent these kinds of infections.
