Do You Drink Sugary Drinks Every Day?

It’s no secret that Americans love sugar, but up until now we didn’t realize how badly we love it. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost one-third of Americans drink at least one sugar-laden soda or other sweetened drinks every single day. The fear is that sugary drink are the major source of added sugars consumed by Americans.

These drinks can lead to obesity, heart disease and diabetes. One of the problems is that these sugar-sweetened beverages are heavily marketed to people 18 to 24 and they have no nutritional value.

Soyhun Park of the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and the team reported their findings in the February 26 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The survey included people in 23 states and the District of Columbia, who were asked if they consumed one or more sugary drinks a day. Percentages of those that did consume at least one sugary drink ranged from 18% to 47.5% and people aged 18 to 24 were most likely to consume at least one sugary drink a day. Among those surveyed, those that were most likely to have at least one of these drinks are men, blacks, unemployed adults and those with less than a high school education. One of the problems is that advertising campaigns for these products cater to young target audiences.

One of the best things to do for your family is stock your fridge with healthy alternatives. Make sure you encourage your children to drink plenty of water and when they have a taste for something sweet, make sure there’s seltzer water, 100 percent juices, soymilk and homemade infused waters in your fridge. Bad habits start at home, so make sure you’re setting a good example for your kids.
