This Halloween Be Mindful of Other’s Health Issues

Halloween is one of those days that many people love because it’s fun to dress up and eat tons of goodies. It’s also a good time to remind people to be sensitive of things like allergies and costumes that can open your eyes to real life health issues that people are going through.

Target

Most people love shopping at Target because it’s one of those stores where you can find almost anything. The popular retailer recently, featured a girl with disabilities in a Halloween ad. The young girl is dressed as Elsa from Frozen is shown with arm crutches and leg braces and is seen surrounded by other children in costumes. The photo of the ad went viral on Twitter and people applauded Target for including a child with disabilities.

Teal Pumpkin Project

The Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) launched The Teal Pumpkin Project in 2014 in order to raise awareness of food allergies. The nationwide movement offers an alternative for kids with food allergies, as well for those that can’t eat candy. Many families with children that have food allergies color a pumpkin teal and put it out in front of their homes in order to share awareness. If you see a teal pumpkin on someone’s porch, this means it is a safe place for children with food allergies to trick or treat. The project was created in order to include those children that have these limitations and to make sure they feel included. The top three food allergies are milk, eggs and peanut, which a lot of Halloween candy include.

Anna Rexia

Picking out your costume can be a difficult task, but making sure you have the best costume does not have to insult others or be controversial. There is a costume called Anna Rexia Halloween costume that is poking fun of people that are anorexic. Jessi Davin, a 26 year old anorexia sufferer posted the following: “Think Anorexia is funny? Sorry. I am a survivor and find NOTHING cute about this,” she wrote of the costume.”I almost died from this. I know it’s supposed to be funny and shit and yeah I get that, but seriously. THIS IS NOT FUNNY,” she continued. “Anorexia is nothing to party about or laugh at. It’s real, it’s deadly, and should not be marketed as a slutty outfit.”

This Halloween, be safe and be considerate of others. It is a time to have fun and enjoy yourselves, but be kind and be grateful for your health and the life you lead.
