Cuban Lung Cancer Vaccine is Coming to the U.S.

According to the Lung Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the U.S. and in Cuba it’s the 4th leading cause of death. For over 25 years Cuba has been doing research on a lung cancer vaccine and pretty soon it will make it’s way to the U.S.

The vaccine is called CimaVax and it has been available to Cubans since 2011, free of charge. This week, the Center for Molecular Immunology signed an agreement with the Roswell Park Center Institute in New York to import the vaccine and begin clinical trials in the U.S.

Currently, American doctors are trying to get the FDA to approve clinical trials because studies have found that even though the vaccine works, it has some side effects. The vaccine boosts the immune system of someone who has lung cancer, so it prevents the tumor from growing. Cimavax attacks a hormone in your body that if left alone could make a tumor grow. It won’t cure lung cancer, but it will allow patients to live longer, especially those under the age of 60.

There’s also good reason to believe that it might help treat and prevent other types of cancer, like breast, colorectal, prostate, ovarian, and head & neck cancers. This is very exciting news because even though it doesn’t cure cancer, it has the potential to slow down these cancers. Plus the shot is economical because it costs the Cuban government just $1.
