Gina Rodriguez, star of Jane the Virgin is always candid about issues that personally affect her. She’s spoken openly about body issues, having an underactive thyroid, and even the insecurities she feels on an everyday basis. Now, she’s getting a little personal and opening up about growing up in a conservative household and feeling guilty about masturbating and wanting to play a character that is bisexual.
The star is on the cover of Bust Magazine, and like many Latino’s, she was raised in a purity culture. “I was definitely raised with that. In all honesty, I used to feel guilty for masturbating,” she says. On Jane the Virgin she plays a Latina that grew up in a Catholic household, which was not too different from real life. “Oh my god, this extreme guilt! And that lasted way too long. Or maybe I masturbated too much! It’s OK to look back in retrospect and be like, it wasn’t good that I felt bad about touching myself. And it isn’t bad that I want to share my love with my boyfriend. I’m 32 years old, I’m an adult, I can do that!”
She even touched on the issue of Jane being bisexual. “So many fans ask me if Jane is bisexual,” she says. “Jane is the furthest from bisexual–maybe Gina’s a little closer than Jane is!–but I love that they want that. And I’m all about ‘Jetra.’ I love ‘Jetra.'” Petra is Rafael’s ex-wife and Jane and Petra together are where the Jetra comes from. She goes on to say that she would want to play out bisexual actress Stephanie Beatriz’s fictional girlfriend on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. “I want to play her love interest so bad, I really hope they make that happen.”

Even though Rodriguez hasn’t confirmed if she’s bisexual, she’s currently dating Joe LoCicero and she doesn’t feel like she needs to define her sexuality. “I don’t need anyone to define their sexuality to me nor do I feel the need to either. I love hearts. Period,” she says on Twitter.
