Thalia: Lyme Disease is No Joke

Thalia suffers from Lyme disease and the singer posted a photo on Instagram telling her followers how she continues to get treatment for the disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection you get from the bite of an infected tick, many times deer ticks can carry the bacteria that causes the disease. Recently Carmen Salinas mocked Thalia, poking fun at the disease, but in reality Lyme disease is no laughing matter.

“Does she have a deer in her house? You need to fumigate that field, honey, and fumigate yourself too!” said Salinas. Thalia has been battling for disease for several years and in many cases the symptoms continue years later.

What are the symptoms?

One of the first noticeable symptoms is a sting on the skin that leaves the area looking like a bull’s eye. As the infection spreads, a person might have symptoms similar to the flu, such as:

“Health is the most important thing to have!” says Thalia. “We have to stay on top of it and address any uncomfortable symptoms without delay. A disease like #Lyme requires a lot of attention, because at any moment it can flare up because of external circumstances such as tension, food intake, exercise and a lot of mental stress. All of these can make our immune system suffer and give Lyme and its co-infections the right environment to attack.”

Antibiotics can cure most cases of Lyme disease, but many times recovery can be long and slow when it is not diagnosed immediately. Thalia was first diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2008 and she’s still receiving treatment, which shows how uncomfortable the disease is, since the symptoms can flare up at any time.

Thalia fired back at Salinas, saying how this disease shouldn’t be taken lightly. “I’m reminded of the thousands of people that lost the battle against this illness. I think of all of our Hispanic brothers that work as gardeners cutting grass in areas that are covered with infected ticks that carry the Lyme bacteria and other infections, leaving them practically incapacitated and preventing them from living a normal life if they are bit by those infected ticks.”

Salinas later apologized saying, “Dear Thalia, I didn’t know the seriousness of this illness; they talked about a tick and I didn’t know what it was, a thousand apologies.” She also added that she adores Thalia and that she’s keeping her in her prayers.

Lyme disease is no joke and we’re glad Thalia is being taken care of and that she’s helping raise awareness about this disease.
