Luis Coronel recently celebrated his 20th birthday and he’s accomplished a lot at such a young age. The young heartthrob had humble beginnings and was even a boxer in his teens when he suffered from depression having lost his father at a young age.

Many times Coronel didn’t have much to eat at home and to make matters worse, he was constantly bullied for being poor. Kids would laugh at his old shoes or because he didn’t have socks, or simply because he would wear the same shirt and pants every day of the week. His mother worked at a fitness center as a cleaning lady and she gave him everything she could, even though many times it wasn’t enough.
His father was in jail for 2 years since he was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, then was deported to Mexico, and even though he tried coming back several times, he wasn’t successful. One day the family received a call that their father was in an accident and died, this is when Coronel’s life came crashing down.
During that same time, his family was evicted because his mom didn’t have enough money to pay for rent. His aunt took him, his mom, sister, brother and niece in, where they all lived in a one-bedroom. Coronel’s mother worked at the fitness center from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at night and eventually he went to live at the gym where he slept under a boxing ring. That’s when he fell into a deep depression.
He thought about taking his life, either by throwing himself in front of a car, hanging himself, or by shooting himself with a gun. He thought that through taking his life, he wouldn’t suffer as much as he was.
Coronel used to sing at church choirs since the age of 6, but it wasn’t until he uploaded a video on YouTube that his music career skyrocketed. His videos went viral and eventually landed in the hands of a music producer, Del Records, who signed him at the age of 16.
Since then he’s had hit after hit and has reached the top spots on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums and even became a judge on Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento. Coronel never hides his humble beginnings and thanks his mother for all the sacrifices she made for him. Check out the interview with el Gordo y la Flaca:
