“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,” says Gomez. During this difficult time she tried to keep out of the spotlight, and gossipers often speculated that she had addiction problems.

Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body, including your skin, joints and organs. With lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is what fights off viruses, bacteria and germs. Chemotherapy is often used to suppress the abnormal immune response in some patients with lupus.

Gomez admits that it hasn’t been easy. “I was in a bikini and got publicly ripped for being overweight,” she says. “That was the first time I’d experienced body shaming like that. I believed some of the words they were saying.” The hate motivated her to propel her to new places for her new album, Revival. This is why you see her baring her body on the cover of Billboard because she’s not afraid of what the critics will say. She definitely shouldn’t because at just 23 years of age she’s gone through so much and has helped other young women overcome many of their insecurities.
