Sunburned?

Sunburn is no joke. You go the beach and you’re in the water because the weather is so nice. It’s cloudy, but it’s still warm outside, so you don’t have to worry about getting sunburned, right? Wrong. One of the biggest mistakes people make is not wearing any sunblock because it’s cloudy. Regardless of the cloud coverage the sun’s rays can still burn your skin and the results are not pretty.

Remedies For Sunburn

  1. Keep Hydrated: First of all if you’ve been out in the sun for an extended period of time, make sure you get hydrated. Eat fruits high in water content like watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe. Remember that sunburn dries your skin, so make sure you drink up.
  2. Oatmeal: Grind a cup of oatmeal and add it to your bath (make sure it’s cool water). You can also make cool compresses filled with oatmeal and apply them to the affected area every couple of hours.
  3. Green tea: This tea works from the inside out because the tea’s catechin compounds can help protect against the sun’s harmful radiation and just drinking 2 cups a day can add sun protection. Plus the tannic acid can help soothe sunburn pain and keep you hydrated.
  4. Cucumbers: Cucumbers are great summer food, plus if you mash it up and apply it to your sunburned skin it can help.
  5. Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is the best, but you can also use white vinegar. Add one cup to your cool bath water to soothe your skin.

There are many products that you can buy at the store made with Aloe and moisturizers, but you have to remember that your skin is burned and it will not go away quickly. Sunburned skin can last a couple of days and if you overdid it and developed blisters, it might take longer to recover. A severe sunburn that gives you nausea, chills, fevers, weakness, or intense itching will need medical attention, so call your doctor immediately.

Learn from your mistakes. Your skin will take approximately 3 to 6 months to recover. When you begin to peel, your new skin will be more sensitive, which means you’ll burn faster the next time if you’re not careful.

Make sure you apply sunscreen when you know you’re going for a walk, are going to be gardening, or outside for an extended period of time. Don’t forget to wear sunblock when you’re driving because the sun will still burn through windows.
