Do you ever wonder why people look so young have beautiful skin, and very few wrinkles? It’s not luck and it’s not all about having good genes. Moisturizing does wonders and you have to start early!

How early? It starts with your parents when you’re a baby because yes-even babies have dry skin. Many Latina moms are adamant about moisturizing and they encourage their children, especially as teens to start using moisturizer because that’s when they start developing acne. While water and a healthy diet plays a big part on your skin, it’s important to help out your skin and keep it moisturized.

One of the things that people don’t realize is that your skin communicates with you. In the winter your skin dries out and you can develop patches of dry skin and it hurts! This is your skin screaming that it needs to be moisturized. Same thing goes for chapped lips, dry hands, and dry legs and feet.

There are so many different products out there, so how do you know what to look for? Moisturizers come in the form of humectants and emollients. Glycerin is an example of a humectant that draws water into the outer layer of the epidermis. Emollients like petroleum jelly are what make your skin sting when it’s too dry, they are moisturizers that leave the skin feeling smooth, acting as a sealer to existing moisture. There are many products that include both, so you don’t have to worry about choosing one or the other.

Our skin produces natural oil called sebum that is produced by sebaceous glands, this is the greasy stuff that you feel on your face. Its purpose is to collect dead cells, dirt, and guard your skin against viruses and bacteria. When you wash your face, you remove your natural oils, which is why your face feels dry. Without moisturizer you’re skin is exposed to allergens, antigens, irritation, dryness, pollution, and even smoke.

When you apply moisturizer to your face you are protecting your face from all of this and helping your skin feel hydrated, healthy, and looking younger. Even makeup can cause damage to your skin because it has chemicals, so it’s important to always moisturize prior to applying your foundation or blush on your face.

As you age your skin changes, so the moisturizer you used in your 20’s might not be as great when you’re in your 30’s and so on, so talk to your doctor or dermatologist and get guidance for what best suits your skin type.
