Movember Is Helping Raise Awareness One Mustache At A Time

Mustaches are not just for hipsters and in fact, every November perfectly ordinary men take on the brave task of Movember: growing a mustache for charity in order to raise awareness about certain men’s health issues: prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues such as depression.

Where did Movember begin?

Movember began in Melbourne, Australia 10 years ago when a group of friends decided to revive an old-fashioned trend, the mustache. At first, thirty guys took part just to see what would happen and when they realized how much fun it was, they started raising money and at the same time, raising awareness for prostate cancer.

In 2004, the event grew to 450 participants and together they raised a whopping $43,000. But that figure pales in comparison when taking into account what it had grown into by 2012. By this time, Movember had become a fully-fledged annual event, taking part in 21 countries it made over 114 million dollars.

Does Testicular Cancer Affect Hispanic Men?

According to the American Cancer Society, testicular cancer among Hispanic men has increased to 58% between 1992 and 2010. It’s a hefty increase as it is affecting more and more men, just last year there were 58,400 cases recorded.

The Mustache is a ribbon for men’s health and Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. Sporting upper lip hair has effectively become a walking and talking billboard for 30 days helping raise funds and much-needed awareness around the often ignored issues of men’s health.

How do I get involved?

The first thing you need to do is register. Once on the site, you can decide whether you’re working alone, or whether you want to team up or join another ‘pack’. Funds raised are directed to their programs, which are shaped by their vision to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. If you need tips on growing  your mustache, click here.
