One of the richest men in the world, Carlos Slim, has created an educational platform accessible to over 147 countries. The Mexican telecommunications mogul launched an online school called Aprender.org through the Carlos Slim Foundation, which has 72 online courses that will benefit students in middle school through Master’s degree.

“We need to refresh education, make it fun. Technology has allowed people to be communicated and have access to knowledge. We are looking to offer and integrate all of these countries in an educational platform where everyone can train themselves,” says Carlos Slim.

The best part of this is that anyone that has access to the Internet or a smartphone can access the free online educational platform. Aprende is the Spanish word for learn and you can download the app called App-Prende. The website will also have a jobs section where students can search for jobs.

“Gratuitous educational content from middle school to Master’s degree level…will be a paradigm change in which the equality of the content is one-hundred percent control,” said Arturo Elías Ayub, Telmex Foundation General Director.

Mexico’s public education system is ranked among the lowest performing and has been criticized for low levels of academic rigor. The Carlos Slim Foundation has reached official agreements with Mexico’s Secretary of Public Education (SEP) and the Khan Academy so that some of the courses can be officially recognized.

In addition Slim revealed that his company is working on increasing connectivity through smartphones to those that still have no access to the Internet in order to have access to the educational platform.

“This project will be presented in September before the International Union of Telecommunications (UIT), with the goal being that other countries join this initiative and more people around the world can have better connectivity,” Slim explained.
