How To Take A Lead On Diabetes Precautions

Family sits around a dinner table sharing a meal

A young woman with long brown hair has her fork in a salad smiling at the cameraHaving to think about all of the precautions when you have diabetes can be overwhelming. Letting it slip is easy, especially when you’re used to doing things and no one taught you any different about controlling your diabetes.

Being weary of what can hurt or harm is important. The following are ways that you can take your diabetes under control and keep yourself healthy.

1. Make foot exams easy

Your feet should be kept clean and clear of sores or cuts. Wearing shoes around the house is important along with socks on a daily basis to prevent moisture build up, fungi or rashes. The best way to check the bottoms of your feet is with a mirror. Finding a “self-exam telescoping mirror” can be the answer for you, making checking the soles of your feet much easier.

2. Make over your pasta

Adding shredded chicken or a whole lot of veggies to pasta like macaroni and cheese can help make you feel fuller with about a third of the carbohydrate as the pasta. These additives should equate the amount of pasta you put in.

3. No need for blood sugar guilt

When your blood sugar is too high, don’t get upset with yourself. Instead ask yourself why your blood sugar was high. Did you forget to count some carbohydrates? Did you not do your daily exercise? How can you help avoid your blood sugar from being on the wrong end of the spectrum going forward? Knowing how to improve your blood sugars is better than getting yourself upset about not doing so well.

4. Play the shredding game

Cut up your food before you eat it. Your brain will think you’re eating more than you actually are and help you feel fuller. Think about it; cut up food looks like more however you decide to turn your plate. Chewing also will help you feel full since your brain will think you’re consuming more than you actually are.

5. No outside food allowed

What do you do when this happens and you get caught with a snack? Tell them that you have diabetes and that you have to follow a strict diet. Being honest might allow you to hold on to your snack stash.
