Even though this is the first cap to be approved by the FDA, there are already other caps that can be purchased online and some cancer facilities already use. Some doctors believe that the cooling of the scalp might help protect any cancer cells from the chemo, allowing them to grow.
According to the American Cancer Society, the decision whether to use the cold cap should be made by the patient and her cancer care team.
