Carmen Carrera made a name for herself when she was a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race when she became the first openly transgender contestant on the show. After the show, she medically transitioned, and now she is ready to be the first Victoria’s Secret transgender Angel.

Currently there is a petition circulating and nearly 50,000 people have signed it asking Victoria’s Secret to make her an Angel. “I want to do this for the 50,000 people who signed the petition on Change.org,” she said in an interview with Time Magazine.

Carrera says that it’s very difficult being a trans-woman. “I feel like a lot of the time it’s the transgender people who are having a more difficult time fitting in with society, so we have those conversations and we to have those lessons about pronouns and the right words…I have to deal with functioning as a 20-something woman, trying to balance her life and her kids and her marriage,” she explains. Carrera says that she has to play catch-up and has to learn how to function day-to-day in the female population.

“Besides accepting us or being tolerant or knowing the right language, [and] actually knowing that there are girls like me who feel like the new girls. We need our sisters. Now [that] we’ve gone through the transition and we’re just trying to fit in and live a good, successful, happy life,” she says.

With Caitlyn Jenner and other transgender celebrities like Laverne Cox, being transgender is more mainstream. They have started the conversation and whether they’ve received positive or negative feedback, people are talking and that’s very important.

Carrera is excited about living in the now and becoming part of the mainstream because so many trans-gender people have been discriminated, ridiculed, and hurt in the past. She is also an AIDS/HIV activist. Carrera is excited about what the future will hold. So far she’s on her second reality show on VH1’s Couples Therapy and was also in the movie, Ricky and the Flash with Meryl Streep. Her future is very bright and hopefully she will also fulfill her dream of becoming Victoria’s Secret first transgender Angel.
