With the ease of technology many parents know that if their kids are curious about something they just Google it. It’s not like back in the day when we had to have uncomfortable conversations with our kids about the birds and the bees. Now sex is everywhere, it’s mainstream, so kids know more than we think—but not so fast.

There are many dangers that come with technology, so it’s important to reach out to your kids and talk to them about the dangers of the internet and encourage an open conversation with them about anything that they’re curious about.

Many parents purchase a cell phone for their children because their number one concern is their safety. Growing up I didn’t have a cell phone and if I wanted to go somewhere I either had to tell my parents ahead of time or find a payphone to call them. Now payphones have become extinct, so if you don’t have a cell phone you’re practically lost.

Even though we live in the age of technology where we can find something through the touch of a button, kids are still innocent and naïve. They can easily fall prey of a kidnapper or even human trafficking. It’s something that you think might not happen where you live, but it does.

This is why it’s important to talk to your children about these things ahead of time. Make them aware of the dangers of giving too much information online and always make them feel comfortable if something or someone is bothering them. Listen to their concerns. Make sure they know emergency phone numbers by heart, just in case they don’t have a cell phone with them in case of an emergency.

Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter requires you to be at least 13 years old, but again and again young children are accessing these sites with false information. The same thing with predators, they can falsify information in order to trick children they are the same age. You have to keep track of what your kids are doing online and whom they’re talking to.

With the age of the selfie, sexting is very much a thing, where young people are photographing themselves naked and sending these photographs and videos to others. Many times, these pictures run the risk of going viral or land in the hands of pedophiles, which is a huge risk that they’re taking. There have been many cases of young people getting bullied when these photographs go viral in school as well.

It’s important to let your children know of these dangers and that most importantly, that they can come to you. You are their parent, the voice of authority, but you are also someone that they can confide in and they can come to you when they have questions or have a problem.
