Why Do We Get Migraines in the Summer?

Are you wondering why all of a sudden you’re getting these horrible headaches and migraines? The summer is a great time of the year when people are doing a lot of fun activities outdoors. When this happens, there are environmental factors and precautions that we have to take in order to prevent these migraines, which often keep us from enjoying ourselves.

Dehydration

This is probably the number one reason for migraines in the summer. When you sweat, more water is moving out of your cells and bodies than what you’re drinking. It’s very important to drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. Children should be drinking 4 to 11 cups of water and adults 9 to 13 cups of water. One way to test your hydration levels is through your urine, if you’re not drinking enough water it will be bright yellow.

Barometric Pressure Changes

These are more common when you travel and you’re not used to that specific barometric pressure. Changes in pressure cause changes in oxygen levels and your blood vessels in your head expand and contract. These changes in the size of your blood vessels trigger migraines and headaches. The heat can also cause changes in body temperature, which can cause you to feel tired and develop migraines.

Environmental Factors

Those beautiful flowers you planted in your garden can also trigger migraines. Summer allergens, such as grass pollen can also trigger these painful headaches. Humidity can increase the levels of some allergens in the environment and when it’s humid you can smell odors that you wouldn’t smell on a less humid day. Many times perfumes and other smelly things can trigger headaches when you’re not used to them.

Stress

Taking a handle on stressful situations is difficult, but for many people stress can be a migraine trigger. Your body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses. Many times we can say that we are not stressed, but we can feel physical pain in our arms and shoulders because of stress, as well as migraines.

The summer is a great time to have fun, but take the time to enjoy it safely. Talk to your doctor about your headaches and migraines, chances are that he can recommend specific treatments and medications for some of these problems. Many times something as simple as a glass of water can immediately get rid of your headache.
