Be Worthy of a Big Father’s Day Celebration

One of the biggest complaints about dads on Father’s Day is that they don’t get the big celebration mothers do. Many times children feel more inclined to celebrate mothers in a big way because they do so much for them, encourage them, take care of them when they’re sick, offer advice, etc.

When I think about my father, I think about a man that is a provider. Like many other fathers he would worry about bills and about putting food on the table because with 4 children, they thought it would be best if my mom would stay at home instead of putting us in daycare. This is a luxury that many parents don’t have today.

I consider myself very lucky to have the father that I have. He is caring, loving, and has always been interested in our lives, both personal and professional. We didn’t have a lot growing up, but we never had to worry about anything because both my parents made our happiness a priority.

Now that I am older I think about all of those memories I shared with my father and that I continue to share with him. While we still don’t celebrate my father as much as we do my mother, he deserves a celebration just as big.

To all the great father’s out there, we know you’re trying. Mother’s will always hold a special place in their children’s hearts. They are the ones that carried them in their womb, the ones that layed in their bed with them when they were sick. You just have to make sure you are part of the memory. This doesn’t mean that you have to leave all the dirty work to their mother, it means that you have to be more involved and even though you work long hours, you have to make sure you make time for your kids because even as adults, they’ll remember.

One of the fondest memories all four of us have with our dad is taking public transportation and going to the free summer festivals, to the lake, riding our bicycles, throwing rocks in the water, walking for hours, rolling down on grass hills…

There are too many memories to jot down, but the fact is that even though my dad was very strict growing up and he even made me translate books when I was little because I was forgetting how to read Spanish, he was there. He was there with me, helping create those memories that I will always cherish and remember long after he’s gone.

So this father’s day, don’t complain about not getting a big celebration. Start making those memories with your children so you could be worthy of a big celebration because even as young kids we can understand everything that is going on. We will remember about all the time you spent with us and will not forget the times you could’ve spent with us, but instead ignored us for a TV show or something else. Remember, it’s not always about how expensive the gift is, but how much you enjoy it.
