Keep Your Hair Shiny and Healthy This Fall

The fall weather is officially here and the cold temperatures could start giving you some major hair problems. It’s time to put your summer products away, visit the beauty salon, and give your hair some TLC to keep your hair looking healthy during the cold weather.

First thing’s first. We know that taking a hot shower during the cold weather feels so good, but washing your hair with hot water will actually dry out your hair. Instead wash your hair with warm or cool water. Cold water closes your pores in your scalp and seals your cuticles, flattening them to lock in moisture and make your hair look shinier.

Depending on your hair type, you may want to purchase a shampoo that focuses on curly, wavy, or straight hair. Look for shampoos that include natural oils and that increase volume, since the cold weather can cause your hair to flatten.

Look for natural shampoos that don’t contain sulfates or harsh detergents, since these can dry out your hair. Wash your hair only a couple of times a week because over washing can also strip your hair of their natural oils and cause it to get dry and make it more prone to split ends and breakage.

Condition Condition Condition

During the summer you might get away without using conditioner, but as a rule of thumb, always use conditioner especially if your hair is prone to tangling. To prevent knots in your hair, comb your hair before taking a shower that way you don’t have to worry about knots later. Condition your hair and leave the conditioner in your hair while you wash the rest of your body. Leave in conditioner is also a must, which will help keep your hair looking soft and healthy. There a variety of reasons you may need to condition your hair and these are some of the best fixes for common problems:

Knots: Add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water to a spray bottle. Spray onto damp hair and massage to get rid of tangled hair.

Dry hair: Coconut is probably the best for dry hair, especially if your hair is dyed. Warm up some coconut oil and apply it onto your hair and leave it for an hour, cover it with a towel or shower cap, then rinse it off.

Dandruff: Tea tree oil is great for your skin and hair. Just add a few drops of tea tree oil into your shampoo bottle and wash as normal to get rid of dandruff. Make sure you massage your scalp when washing your hair.

Leave-in conditioner: If you want soft hair, then try this mixture of oils: 3oz of avocado oil, 2 oz of extra virgin olive oil, 1 oz of almond oil, 1 oz of castor oil, 1 ounce of liquid coconut oil, and 5-7 drops of your favorite essential oil, like lavender for example.

Remember that brushing your hair immediately after you shower can stretch your hair strands and cause your hair to break and fall off. This also creates knots and more split ends.

The best thing for split ends is trimming them often, so visit your beauty salon and get a trim. Also, don’t forget to get a deep conditioning treatment. You can get one for your specific hair type and needs. Talk to your hairdresser because she can recommend specific hair products that will work great on your hair.
