Golden Globe Winner, Oscar Isaac…Focused on Individualism

Latinos shined bright during last night’s 73^rd Gold Globe Awards. Oscar Isaac is especially having a great 2016 having won for Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film for Show Me a Hero, not to mention that he shocked the world when he kissed Elvira Lind (his fiancé!) after they announced his big win.

The 36-year-old Guatemalan not only starred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens last year, but he’s also in the X-Men:Apocalypse movie that will be released later this year. Isaac is a newcomer to the Hollywood scene (even though he’s had several small roles since 1996). Before becoming an actor, he graduated from Julliard in 2005 and even has a band called the Blinking Underdogs where he played lead guitar and sang.

In an interview with GQ Magazine, Isaac explains how important individualism is for him, something he learned from his father. “For my father, individualism was very important, and he instilled that in me,” Isaac says. “It was way more important to recognize myself as an individual than as part of a group. I wasn’t part of the ‘Latino community.’ I was just a kid in high school with friends, who was into playing music.”

“I never thought of myself as an ethnic actor,” he adds. “I don’t feel comfortable saying I speak for Guatemalans. Or for Latin men. Or for Latin men that are five- nine.…” Perhaps it’s his unique personality and way of seeing things that has landed him the roles he’s earned.

It looks like Isaac is starting the year off right. Other Latinos that shined bright during the Golden globes are Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu who took home a Golden Globe for Best Director for The Reverant, Mexican actor, Gael Garcia Bernal took another one for Best Performance in a television series or comedy for Mozart in the Jungle.
