Joan Sebastian, the King of the Mexican Rodeo passed away on July 13th after a very long battle with bone cancer. The 64 year old singing legend was first diagnosed with bone cancer in 1999, then again in 2007, and for a third time in 2012. During his 16 year battle with bone cancer, he was very open about his disease and often he was on top of a horse at a rodeo performing at his concert, while having received chemotherapy just a couple hours earlier. He was very devoted to his music and his fans, which is why this Mexican legend was so loved by many.

When someone as famous as Sebastian dies, it brings awareness to the disease. Many celebrities choose to keep their illness private and don’t share much about what they’re going through. But, there are many that feel the need to share their stories in order to help others who are going through the same thing. They serve as inspiration to others and helps them fight through this.
“I like to share everything with my public and I have to let you know, to be aware just in case you get sick,” Sebastian said in an interview last year. “I want to give a round of applause to those people that are battling for their lives, thank you, let them know…your loved ones and sick ones that I send them a positive message, tell them that you can live life better with joy, even when you’re a little sick, strive, and lets get on with this beautiful life.”
He received chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and even herbal therapy for his cancer. Cancer found in the bones occurs where the bone cells themselves become malignant. Bone cancer makes up less than 1% of all cancers. Most bone cancers are more common in young adults and children, rather than older people. Cancer found in older adults like Sebastian, are most likely metastatic from another location in the body.
Sebastian received various rounds of chemotherapy, and even a bone marrow transplant. The latest treatment that he had was the application of bone cement, to make them stronger and more resistant. Even though his body responded to the treatment well, he suffered a relapse and passed away. He also lost his favorite horse, Padrino, just 4 days ago (pictured here), whom he loved very much.
