Killer Heels

The average woman owns at least 21 pairs of shoes and if you’re a Latina, it’s probably a little more. A European study concluded that even though women have an extensive and beautiful collection of shoes, they only wear about 5 of them regularly. Some of the reasons were because they didn’t like them anymore or didn’t match with their outfits. They were scared to damage them because they’re too expensive, and the top excuse was because they were just too uncomfortable, specifically high heels.

The Long-term Effects of Wearing High Heels

There is something sexy about women in heels, the way she moves when she walks and the confidence that she gets when she is 3 inches taller. The fact is, high heels are beautiful, but they should not be worn for long periods of time. One in ten women wear high heels at least three days a week. When this becomes part of your weekly routine, it can have an impact on your feet.

When you wear shoes with a heel of two inches or higher your foot slides down in your shoe, which forces your toes in an uncomfortable position. The increased pressure on your toes causes your body to tilt forward, you arch your back more than you’re supposed to, which creates strain on your hips, knees, and back. This can cause problems like sciatica, where your nerves become trapped; you feel pain and numbness that can travel down the side of your leg to your feet. Women who wear heels for a long time can suffer from the shortening of the Achilles tendon, your tendon is designed to be flexible, but when you keep wearing the same type of shoes you can develop unhealthy patterns. Your foot can get used to that position and once you want to change and wear flat it will be difficult and painful.

What’s The Solution?

You don’t have to give up your beautiful high heels, but don’t take your feet for granted. Pick shoes with low heels and with a wide heel base that will let your heel spread more evenly. The more narrow the shoe, the more damage it will do. Also, make sure you’re wearing the right size shoe, get measured professionally and don’t just buy a shoe because it’s on sale. Since you have a great collection of shoes, alternate shoes each day or throughout the day. If you’re going to be standing for long periods of time, by all means avoid wearing high heels those days and opt for a more comfortable option. At the end of the day, take the time to stretch your calf muscles and wear comfortable shoes when you get home. Your feet will thank you later.
