Today, Bayer HealthCare, the makers of Bayer Aspirin and WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease announce year two of Handbags & Hearts, a national campaign that urges women to carry aspirin in their handbags — the one item they do not leave home without – at all times to be prepared for a sudden heart attack. As Mother’s Day nears and women are in the spotlight, Handbags & Hearts encourages women to learn the signs and symptoms of heart attack, as recognizing the symptoms and knowing what to do in the moment could mean the difference between life and death.

“Bayer HealthCare has long been dedicated to providing heart health education,” said Girard Smith, Vice President of Over-the-Counter Marketing, Bayer HealthCare. “We’re proud of the work we’re doing with Handbags & Hearts and hope it helps women to realize that by taking one small step – carrying Bayer Aspirin – they can be better prepared for a heart attack. It’s truly life-saving information.”

When taken during a suspected heart attack and for 30 days thereafter, aspirin has been shown to reduce the risk of death by 23 percent and lessen a heart attack’s damaging effects to the heart muscle.iii Yet, in a national survey, less than one-quarter of women said they carry aspirin in their handbag.ii

“As a cardiologist, I see women everyday who aren’t aware of the unique symptoms women often experience or what to do if they suspect they are having a heart attack. I feel compelled to spread the word, as there are actions we can take to better prepare ourselves and ultimately save lives,” said Tracy Stevens, MD, FACC, Medical Director of the Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute’s Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center and Member of the WomenHeart Scientific Advisory Council, WomenHeart’s advisory group of the nation’s leading experts on women’s heart health. “I am excited to team up with Bayer HealthCare again on Handbags & Hearts, as it helps us spread the word about heart attack preparedness and I encourage all women to visit www.HandbagsAndHearts.com to learn more.”
