How To Protect Your Hair From UV Rays

UVA/UVB rays are very damaging to the hair, but as in most cases, the inflicted harm is not seen immediately as compared to the skin, and we don’t take the right precautions.

The sun’s rays can cause permanent damage, penetrating the cuticle up to the hair shaft (cortex), damaging and destroying the cells that provide elasticity and strength to hair. They can worsen hair fall and damage the epidermis health. They can also dry hair and fade its natural or chemical pigments (hair color or dyes), thus making the color less durable and your hair less shiny. We asked L’Oréal Paris Brand Ambassador, Marcos Carrasquillo, for his tips to keep your hair and color healthy.

What measures should you take to prevent this damage?

First, you must repair the damage to your hair before sun exposure and use hair products with sunscreen that preserve color and moisturize. To repair hair damage, I recommend L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Total Repair Extreme system, designed for all types of damaged hair. Since these products are for protection and prevention, it’s important that you use them consistently as seawater or chlorine can remove the product little by little until you have no protection. Hair masks can also be very helpful as treatments before or after sun exposure, you can try Total Repair Extreme Emergency Recovery Mask.  While sunburn or skin cancer isn’t a concern for your hair, you can see and feel how your hair is damaged when it’s not protected from ultraviolet rays, causing short and long-term damages. External factors such as chlorine, saltwater, wind, rain, dryness, humidity and chemicals are very harmful to hair’s health. That’s why it’s always important to rinse hair with fresh water after bathing on the pool or the beach, to remove most of salt and chlorine.
