Teen pregnancies are not as prevalent as they were 10 or 20 years ago, but in the Latino community we can name at least one person that became a parent when they were just teens. Those that became young parents often struggle if they don’t have the support of their parents, but there are many that are forced to grow up quickly. Romeo Santos can relate, since he became a parent when he was just 19 years old.
Celebrities are often very protective of their children and for Romeo it was no different. For many years people didn’t even know he had a child. His son came into the spotlight when he asked Romeo that he wanted to be on the cover of a magazine with the singer. “I wanted to show him that I was proud of him. I wanted my child to understand that I wasn’t hiding his existence. I was protecting him,” said Romeo to Billboard.
He admits that when he first found out of he was going to be a father, he fled because it wasn’t planned. “I felt that I was a child having a child and I stayed away during the first 2 years,” said Romeo to People en Español.
Romeo has always been very reserved about his personal life. “It’s one of the reasons why many people have asked me if I’m gay. I’m not. I simply don’t want to show off my girlfriend, when I have one. I’m not married. I just want to sell music, which is the only thing that I’m interested in selling.”
In a recent interview with his son, he talks about the relationship he has with his son Alex Damián. “This kid is so competitive in sports, that I think he’s an Alpha Romeo, because I am competitive, but this is excessive,” says the singer. They like playing basketball together and when his 14-year-old son beats him he gets super emotional.
When asked if Alex Damián would follow in his footsteps, he said that his son is not really interested in music. “Hypothetically speaking, if he tells me someday that he wants to be an artist, first I would try to convince him not to, but if it’s something that interests him, then I would support and guide him,” says Romeo.
Looks like even though their relationship got off to a rocky start, they’re slowly building a great father and son relationship.
