Disney’s First Latina Princess

For many years Sofía was thought to be the first Latina princess, but as it turns out she’s not. Disney’s first-ever Latina princess, Elena is making her small screen debut on the Disney channel called Elena of Avalor.

The princess is a confident 16-year-old teen that lives in an enchanted fairytale kingdom inspired by diverse Latino cultures and folklore. Disney did their homework to make sure this Latina princess is as Latina as she can possibly be. Aimee Carrero is the voice of Elena and Layana Aguilar is getting the privilege of designing Elena’s clothing.

We’re pretty sure hundreds of designers jumped on the opportunity to dress a Disney princess, but former Project Runway contestant Layana Aguilera won the honor.

Aguilera is Brazilian and she designed a beautiful red gown with a floral print. Like most Disney princesses, Elena’s dress is a ball gown. Aguilera explains that the dress she designed is a very Peruvian, Inca-like dress. “This is a dream come true,” explains Aguilar who has a successful clothing line. “This experience opened my mind to other experiences you can have as a fashion designer.”

It will be interesting to see what this princess brings to the table. “What excites us most is the chance to use distinctive animation and visual design to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairy tale,” explains Nancy Kanter, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Disney Junior Worldwide.

The new series is expected to come out this summer and we’re very excited!
