“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief,” said a statement posted on his official social media accounts.

“Very sorry and sad to say it’s true. I’ll be offline for a while. Love to all,” his son, “Moon” film director Duncan Jones, tweeted.

The Pop legend broke many barriers for both artists and fans because he wasn’t afraid to explore with different sounds and even his own look and sexuality. He created alter ego’s like Ziggy Stardust, which was a red haired alien rock star bringing a message of hope to young people on Earth, one of the most iconic characters he created. He played with sexuality and inspired so many creatively.

Just days ago, Bowie released his final album, Blackstar on January 8, which also happened to be his birthday. The album is said to be a final goodbye to his loyal fans that followed his music and career for over 50 years. In one of the singles from the album called Lazarus, the song says:

“Look up here. I’m in heaven….Oh I’ll be free..just like that blue bird. Oh I’ll be free. Ain’t that just like me.”

David Bowie’s death came to a surprise to many, since many didn’t know he had cancer and the outpour of love and support continues to pour in London and all over the world.
