Restorative yoga is the alignment of your breathing and body by practicing stillness or very gentle movements for an extended period of time. By holding these poses for several minutes, many people have found that they can tone their body.

Restorative yoga helps heal the body and the mind, especially if you live a stressful busy life. It has helped many people get over an emotional depression, anxiety, or a traumatic change in their life. This type of yoga can activate the nervous system, which helps the mind and the muscles in your body become relaxed. The relaxed yoga poses allow the body to the naturally release the tension and stress from the body, which helps restore the nervous system, get rid of toxins, and regulate the body’s natural functions.

Tips for Beginners

  1. Find a space. Restorative yoga is all about allowing yourself to relax, so find a place that is peaceful and quiet. Or play quiet soft music; create an ambiance where you know you won’t be disturbed.
  2. Begin by stretching. Like with any new form of exercise, it is very important to stretch and warm your muscles, preparing the body for the poses you are about to do.
  3. Practice at any time. Many people take a couple minutes to do yoga at their office, especially when they have a lot of stress or a busy day ahead of them. You only need 10 to 20 minutes, and it can help you clear your mind and feel refreshed to confront the difficulties in your everyday life.
  4. Find the support you need. Many instructors advice those practicing this yoga to find props to feel completely supported. Things, such as blankets, pillows, towels, and even a good chair are things you already own, so there’s no need to spend any money. The better the body is supported, the deeper the relaxation will be and the more muscle tension you will release.
  5. Breathe and relax. Pay attention to your breathing, inhale and exhale in equal length, this will help you relax and concentrate.
