A video of an off duty police officer helping a man that was hanging off the edge of a bridge ready to take a plunge is going viral because it’s a moment of compassion and a reminder of how we all have to help each other. September 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day, which raises awareness on the pain people face with mental health issues. Just like this officer, it’s important to offer a hand and reach out to people when they are in need in order to prevent them from committing suicide.

What Are the Signs?
People that have lost loved ones to suicide always ask themselves if there were any warning signs, and in most cases there were. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention these are the some of the suicide warning signs to look out for:
- If a person talks about killing themselves, having no reason to live, being a burden to others, feeling trapped and are in unbearable pain.
- When they act irresponsibly or recklessly.
- Isolating themselves from family and friends.
- Sleeping too much or too little.
- Searching online for ways to kill themselves.
- Being depressed, aggressive or full of rage for no apparent reason.
- Feeling anxious, having a loss of interest or irritated.
- Increased use of alcohol or drugs to help forget what they’re going through.
One of the first things to do if you suspect someone is in danger of committing suicide is to get him or her professional help. Don’t ignore their mood, behavior or actions. People that are thinking about committing suicide need professional help.
