Thalia is a Mexican superstar that has had a great career as a singer, soap opera actress and fashion designer. What most people don’t know is that she has dyslexia. In a candid interview with El Gordo y La Flaca, she talks about how her family found out she had this learning disability as a child. When her father was sick, he was in a coma, and when she kissed him at his deathbed, he passed away. She thought she had killed him with that kiss and she punished herself by staying silent for a whole year.

Her mom then took her to see a psychologist, worried about her daughter’s mental health. This is when they found out the reason she stopped talking and the fact that she had dyslexia. In the interview, she said, “Thanks to those weird things that happen with my dyslexia I’ve found some marvelous things happen in my life.”  This is also a reason why she has trouble speaking English and also credits her dyslexia to meeting her husband of 14 years, Tony Motola.

What Is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is more common that you think, affecting 1 in 5 people in the U.S. This is a learning disorder characterized by having difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to words. There is no cure for dyslexia, yet people with dyslexia can succeed in life just like Thalia has with a specialized education program. People with dyslexia have problems reading, spelling, trouble learning a foreign language, difficulty memorizing things, and doing math problems. Many people who have dyslexia also have Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder. Normally it’s caught early on in childhood, but there are many that get by without  getting diagnosed until they’re adults.
