Es posible tener una vacuna contra la COVID-19 en otoño, ¿pero a qué precio?

Los esfuerzos por crear una vacuna para la COVID-19 avanzan a un ritmo sin precedentes, y ahora se están evaluando ocho candidatos distintos en humanos en todo el mundo.

Pero tener una vacuna disponible para su uso generalizado a principios del año que viene conllevaría ignorar ciertas normas de seguridad y evaluación, unas acciones que podrían poner la salud, y quizá las vidas, de los voluntarios de las pruebas en riesgo.

“Es posible tener una vacuna en otoño o invierno”, afirmó el Dr. Greg Poland, director del Grupo de Investigación en Vacunas de la Clínica Mayo en Rochester, Minnesota. “No es posible tener una vacuna en otoño o invierno que haya pasado por las pruebas de seguridad usuales. Se sacrifica la seguridad por la velocidad”.

El principal experto del gobierno, el Dr. Anthony Fauci, director del Instituto Nacional de Alergias y Enfermedades Infecciosas de EE. UU., provocó algo de escepticismo a finales de abril cuando declaró que era “factible” tener millones de dosis de una vacuna para el coronavirus listas para su distribución en enero.

“Debemos recordar que lo más rápido que en realidad hemos visto que esto se haga es en cuatro años”, comentó el Dr. David Shulkin, exsecretario de Asuntos de Veteranos y expresidente y director ejecutivo del Centro Médico Beth Israel Deaconess, en la ciudad de Nueva York. “Los métodos y procesos tradicionales de desarrollo de vacunas tardan bastante tiempo”.

Pero Shulkin y otros expertos se muestran de acuerdo en que una vacuna para la COVID-19 podría estar lista para su distribución pública antes del cronograma de desarrollo de 12 a 18 meses que se ha sugerido.
